Southern Humpback Whale Migration to Uvita, Costa Rica

Southern Humpback Whale Migration to Uvita, Costa Rica

Every year, the warm waters of Costa Rica’s South Pacific become a sanctuary for one of nature’s most remarkable marine migrations: the arrival of southern humpback whales.

From July through October, humpback whales travel thousands of kilometers from feeding areas in the Southern Hemisphere to Costa Rica’s Pacific coast. They seek warm, protected waters to give birth, care for their calves, and engage in courtship.

Whale Watching Season in Uvita

The first southern humpback whale sightings in Uvita and Bahía Ballena generally begin during the second or third week of July. August and September are usually the peak months, when encounters are most frequent. The season normally continues through October.

The warm waters around Marino Ballena National Park provide an important environment for mothers and calves during this stage of their migration. Sightings are frequent during the main season, but whales remain wild animals and cannot be guaranteed on every tour.

A Special Wildlife Experience

Whale watching in Uvita is an opportunity to observe natural behavior in the whales’ own habitat. Guests may see mothers traveling with calves, whales surfacing to breathe, tail displays, pectoral-fin movements, and, on fortunate days, powerful breaches.

Every trip is different. Our experienced captains and ICT-certified bilingual guides help guests understand the animals and enjoy the experience safely and respectfully.

Responsible Whale Watching in Bahía Ballena

Coral Expeditions Costa Rica follows responsible observation practices designed to reduce disturbance and protect whales and dolphins.

  • Maintaining an appropriate distance from whales and dolphins
  • Respecting their direction and natural movement
  • Never allowing swimming with cetaceans
  • Watching animal behavior for signs of stress or disturbance
  • Allowing the captain to decide when to approach, remain, or leave the area

Responsible whale watching helps protect marine wildlife while offering visitors a safe, educational, and memorable experience.

Whales and the Uvita Community

Bahía Ballena has a deep connection with the ocean. Local captains and guides have helped develop Uvita into one of Costa Rica’s best-known whale-watching destinations while promoting education and marine conservation.

September is celebrated locally as Whale Month, highlighting the importance of humpback whales to the community, the local economy, and conservation awareness.
