Cano Island Biological Reserve

Caño Island Biological Reserve, located off the Pacific coast of Costa Rica, about 16 kilometers northwest of the Osa Peninsula in Puntarenas.

This significant reserve encompasses 320 hectares of land and a vast 5,800 hectares of marine environment. Notably, Caño Island boasts some of the most extensive and well-maintained coral reef systems on the Pacific side of the country, featuring five distinct coral platforms that range in size from 0.8 to 4.2 hectares each.

Beyond its natural beauty, the island also holds historical significance. It is home to remnants of the mysterious stone spheres crafted by pre-Columbian societies. Evidence suggests that Caño Island was utilized by various human groups throughout history. It's believed that between 700 and 1500 AD, the island may have served as a burial site for the Chiriqui people, or as a permanent settlement for the Quepos or Bruncas indigenous communities.

The waters surrounding Caño Island are also a crucial habitat for marine life. It serves as an important breeding area for humpback whales migrating from both the northern and southern hemispheres, and several species of dolphins reside here as well. For those planning a visit, the underwater world offers a truly remarkable experience with abundant marine biodiversity. On any given day, you can expect to encounter sea turtles, rays, dolphins, moray eels, barracudas, sharks, and during their migration seasons, the majestic humpback whales, along with tuna and a variety of other captivating species.

It's important to remember that Caño Island is a protected biological reserve, and therefore, certain regulations are in place to ensure its preservation. The number of divers permitted in the area is controlled, and visitors are strictly prohibited from removing any marine life, whether living or deceased, from the reserve.
