Terraba-Sierpe Mangrove

The Terraba – Sierpe National Wetlands, with a recorded presence of over 300 bird species, presents a compelling area for both birdwatching enthusiasts and conservation efforts.

This remarkable wetland ecosystem encompasses a variety of habitats, including mangrove forests and open waterways, each supporting a unique avian population consisting of migratory, endemic, and resident species. Among the commonly observed species are the vibrantly colored Scarlet Macaw, the melodious Melodious Blackbird, and the striking Bare-throated Tiger-Heron. We encourage you to have your binoculars prepared to observe some of the area’s more notable inhabitants, such as the endangered Yellow-billed Cotinga, a distinguished white bird with a bright yellow bill; the elusive Mangrove Hummingbird, which is endemic to Costa Rica’s Pacific coast; the impressive Boat-billed Heron, easily identified by its distinctive shovel-like bill; and the petite American Pygmy Kingfisher, often seen darting above the water's surface.

Whether you are a novice birder or a seasoned ornithologist, Terraba Sierpe offers an exceptional opportunity to significantly expand your species checklist. We kindly remind you to bring your field guide.
